Acceptable Medications

Having trouble sleeping or suffering from terrible heartburn? There’s no reason to suffer just because you’re expecting. Many aches and pains can be treated with over-the-counter medications – and many of them are perfectly safe to take while you’re pregnant. If you are experiencing an illness or injury that can’t be treated by one of the following – or if medicine doesn’t seem to help your symptoms – call your doctor.

Aches & Pains: Tylenol – Regular or Extra Strength
Constipation: Surfak, Colace, Fibercon, Citucel, Milk of Magnesia, Miralax, Fleets Enema
Cough: Robitussin DM or CF, Mucinex
Diarrhea: Imodium AD, Kaopectate
Fever: Tylenol – Regular or Extra Strength
Gas: Gas X, Mylanta
Heartburn: Maalox, Mylanta, Rolaids, Tums, Zantac, Pepcid, Prevacid*, Prilosec OTC*
Hemorrhoids: Preparation H, Anusol HC, Tucks
Insomnia: Benadryl, Unisom, Tylenol PM
Nausea: Emetrol, Unisom-Doxylamine, Vitamin B6, Dramamine
Runny Nose: Sudafed, Actifed, Benadryl, Coricidin D, Claritin, Zyrtec
Sore Throat: Chloraseptic, Cough drops
Yeast Infection: Gyne-Lotrimin, Mycelex, Monistat

*These medications are only safe during the second and third trimesters.
